Restaurant Engineering with POS Posted on September 5, 2000 Restaurants are like computer-aided manufacturing sites for custom-built food products. The point-of-sale system solution selected serves as a hub guiding the manufacturing process. As such, it must be a smart information management portal between customers, crew, corporate, and other manufacturing components within the store. Manufacturing Solutions As part of their Enterprise Synergy Solutions philosophy, Panasonic POS Systems designed open architecture POS solutions for organizations with expanded management information system needs and capabilities. For the marketplace, this includes two color touchscreen hardware platforms and a software package that incorporates the quick service application experience of more than 35,000 installed locations. First, the JS160 Pentium and 9000 System workstations are compact, all-in-one color touchscreen workstations technically designed for increased uptime and reliability than standard computers. System cost of ownership improves with "no single point of failure" helping ensure high reliability and low MTBF. No Fan, No Filter design, with built-in power supply demonstrates Panasonic's commitment to "purpose built" systems. Next, taking the best of current system software sets, Panasonic created an application, P.O.W.E.R. (Panasonic Open Windows Enterprise for Restaurants), using the standardized strengths of the Windows environment. Modules include Time & Attendance/Labor Management and Inventory/Food Cost Management, and provide opportunities for business growth. Finally, identifying the requirements of the continually evolving Quick Service Market is a challenge. Panasonic accepts that challenge with the foundation they've developed for reliable products that meet and grow with those changing needs. The Pentium/9000 System choices are built on that foundation. Interface to third-party order confirmation and total displays: Helping improve on order accuracy and customer satisfaction, the software interfaces to the family of Texas Digital Order Confirmation Displays. Interface to third-party and custom software solutions: P.O.W.E.R. provides easy-to-use database export files with customized batch file routines for third-party software and PanaNet solutions. Reliable polling: Communication can be dial-in using off-the -shelf packages, such as PC Anywhere®. The P.O.W.E.R. 'Send Mail' feature uses MS OUTLOOK® for Internet operations. Operations Ease of use for manager: Completely customized manager screen layouts with one-touch macros enhance operational tasks. Flexible and fast combo meal handling: Combo Coupon search for qualified items, Tandem PLU feature, and Macro routines aid in achieving this necessary feature. High-volume drive-thru for multiple window configurations: Workstation Order Taker/Cashier mode includes a four-order viewing display to review stored and paid orders. You can also modify orders quickly and accurately. Simple Sandwich modifications: Pop-up menus lead the cashier through condiment selections ensuring easy entry of modified items with or without prices. Sandwiches are assembled in a specific order with respect to ingredients: Color Kitchen Video Screens prioritize modifiers on the fly to assembly screens, increasing order accuracy. Speed of Service Integration with Color Kitchen Video boosts Speed of Service. Menu items are immediately relayed from the workstation to the Kitchen Video System to speed order preparation. Orders are sent by destination to simplify and expedite the packing process. Split screen format separates counter (in and out) and drive--thru orders. Summary, Look, and Recall modes: "Summary" strips the order-orientation, so users can see the exact count requirement by item. "Look" views upcoming orders, and "Recall" reviews previously displayed orders. Drive-thru Order Processing: Panasonic excels in streamlining operations and providing easy processes to handle a break-in-line, drive away car, order change at the window, and coupons/discounts. Advanced reporting Headquarters data consolidation from multiple restaurants: The P.O.W.E.R. 'Send Mail' feature gives you the ability to automatically push standard dbf export files to Corporate via the Internet. Piece-counts: multiple pieces depleted from a single item automatically, providing flexible reporting options for accurate and complete product analysis. Forecasting preparation requirements: Product Comparison, Product Projection, and Product Mix Reports present current and average counts by Time Segment. These reports provide a forecasting method by product sales using your time periods. Labor management Labor Cost by Period Reporting provides time sales data to drive labor scheduling. "Editing hours worked" is a management tool for correcting variances in real time. Labor tracking by day, week, and period, with weekly, biweekly, and semimonthly overtime calculations. Food cost Historical product projections maintained. Food cost reporting: Inventory module provides complete Actual, Theoretical, and Variance reporting for individual analysis and decision making. Inventory entry in multiple units: Entering inventory counts and displaying food cost reports by Unit/Pack/Case offers easy to track inventory for improved accuracy. Security Manager level controls may be assigned to a button by function, i.e. order changes, voids, returns, PLU, etc. Monitor activity with detail information by Cashier and Manager. The Electronic journal provides complete security, detailing transaction data. A Final Note Panasonic POS is part of a global technology company with more than $60 billion in annual sales. Twenty years of experience in identifying and providing point-of-sale technology contributes to their lead role in the Quick Service marketplace today.
