DUMAC Attends MarkeTechnics 2000

Posted on September 15, 2000

DUMAC attended the Supermarket show MarkeTechnics 2000 held in San Francisco February 20-22, 2000. MarkeTechnics is the "technology" show of FMI (the Food Market Institute - www.fmi.org). Unlike the regular FMI show in Chicago each May, MarkeTechnics alters locations each year and will be in New Orleans next year.

Like most industries, Grocery retailers are challenged by new "brick and mortar" competitors as well as a new class of com-petitors, the Internet "e-tailers." MarkeTechnics had several seminars on ways to either join the e-tailers or how to fight them.

There are several technology trends happening within Supermarkets that were in the spotlight at MarkeTechnics:

  • Electronic Shelf Labels (ESL) have been available for awhile, but the investment expense had been too great to offset the savings. NCR has had their ESL products in test in the marketplace for a couple of years now. More chains are beginning to test the return on the investment with pilot sites. Some states, such as Connecticut, are allowing full price removal if the store installs ESL. This allows significant savings to the store and justifies the investment.

  • Self-service Kiosks are gaining acceptance. There are many new software developers (including DUMAC) that are now providing applications for Frequent Shopper, self-service photo development, Deli orders, and many other Kiosk applications. The NCR 7401 Kiosk terminal was the hit of MarkeTechnics.

  • Self-Checkout is also gaining acceptance. NCR's self-checkout product called "SCOT," had a line of people every day wanting to see it. NCR introduced a new innovative "convertible" unit called c-SCOT. c-SCOT allows your cus-tomers to self-check their purchases at the express lanes during slower periods and allows you to quickly convert to a cashier system during peak periods. Since over 90% of your expenses per lane are for labor, SCOT offers a solid Return on Investment for your express lanes.

NCR and their products are registered trademarks of NCR Corporation.
